Hopeful Signs of Reformation in the Church

The church is in desperate need of reformation by a returning to Holy Scripture as her exclusive guide for faith and practice. There are three exciting movements afoot in the church today that are having a reformational effect.

First the resurgence of expository preaching in our land is a hopeful sign. I live in a region which had precious few churches committed to this practice when I moved here 20 years ago, but today there are dozens.

Second, there is a resurgence of reformed theology all across America in nearly every denomination which has at it's heart the doctrine of the sufficiency of scripture and the sovereignty of God.

Third, there is a reformation taking place as church leaders are re evaluating the roles of church and family in light of the clear teaching of scripture. The family, which is the fountain of the church, has been marginalized in modern church life, and yet there are many who are waking up to the complimentary roles of church and home and biblical doctrine of the family. Doug Phillips explains one aspect of this,

"The Church of Jesus Christ is the centerpiece of history. How do you know the health of the Church? look to the families in the church!  How do you know the health of the families?  Look to the vision of the fathers.  Look to the relationships between husbands and wives. Look to the spirit of the children within the homes that make up the Church."

The fact is, the supremacy of Christ in the home dramatically affects the supremacy of Christ in the church.

When the Word is truly honored and put into practice in everyday church and home life; when there is a complete trust in the Word of God; and when homes become places where the fathers preach the gospel when they "sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down and when you rise up", I believe that we will see the church as a beautiful bride instead of desperately trying to please the world while losing her own soul.
