Music, Family, and the Text of Scripture – Three Subjects from This Weekend’s Conference

We spent the weekend withJeff Pollard at Mt. Zion Bible church’s Family Conference. Jeff Pollard leads Chapel Library which is a marvelous worldwide literature distribution ministry. I gave four different messages dealing with different aspects of the family, such as raising children, the responsibilities of fathers and husbands, the gift of singleness, and the Christian family in corporate worship.

You can listen to the messages from this year’s family conference for free here on Sermon Audio. The messages delivered were a great blessing to me and my family and I encourage you to listen to them as well.

Why the Gospel Is Not Christianity 101

Most people think that the Gospel is something that gets you saved and then you move on to bigger and better things – as if the Gospel was Christianity 101. This kind of thinking bears witness to a defective understanding of the Gospel. At our upcoming conference, The Power of the Gospel we will be explaining this in depth. In Romans 1:15-16 Paul makes it clear that the Gospel is for believers, not only unbelievers. Paul was eager to preach the Gospel to the church in Rome, because the people of God need to be nourished by it. And why do we need to be nourished by it? One reason is that everything is rooted in the Gospel. Everything – every category of doctrine, every command echoes back to the Gospel.

You cannot understand the doctrines and the commands the roles and relationshisp of the Bible clearly and deeply without a clear understanding of the Gospel. In this sense the Gospel makes everything else make more sense. It is the “rosetta stone” for every other command and pattern in the Bible. The Gospel is the center point of everything. As the center point, it explains and interprets everything else. Everything points to the Gospel and the Gospel points to everything.

One of the reasons it is critical for believers to continually consider the Gospel, is that they need a constant framework from which to understand everything. The Gospel clarifies everything. The Gospel sweetens everything. You cannot understand marriage, headship, submission, child raising, discipleship, work, preaching, church discipline or anything else unless you see how the Gospel calls for it and how it glorifies the Gospel.

One reason you should consider coming to the Power of the Gospel Conference is that you will walk away with fresh eyes for all of life as well as a renewed understanding of everything that the Gospel commands, provides, produces and implies.

We Are Changing the Name of Our National Conference

We are changing the name of our National Conference in Asheville, October 30-Nov 1, from “Church and Family 2014” to “The Power of the Gospel – Transforming Church and Family.” We are not changing the name because we are changing the focus of the conference. We have done this because we realized our original title was fuzzy and made it hard to know what the conference was about.

As we originally designed, the conference will focus on the spiritual foundation of church and family life – the transforming power of the gospel. We will examine the various elements of the gospel’s power at work in repentance, faith, worship, the filling of the Holy Spirit and the Word of God, as well as divine love at work in foreknowledge, justification, sanctification, perseverance, sovereignty and glorification.

Other Conference Tweaks This Year

You will experience some differences compared to past NCFIC conferences.

More fellowship time

We will start later in the morning and end earlier in the evening

More time for lunch and dinner

More time together in the main auditorium

We will keep the crowd together in the main auditorium during the entire conference with one exception. We are offering only one breakout track on Friday morning where conferees can choose from among 11 messages.

On the Ground in Christchurch, New Zealand

On the Ground in Christchurch, New Zealand

After a long day of travel, our team has landed safely in New Zealand and are making final preparations for our first meetings in Christchurch. Kevin Swanson and I will be delivering six messages today and then preaching on Sunday morning and afternoon.

In order to prepare our hearts for the days ahead, we’ve been memorizing Isaiah 40:1-5, which begins, “‘Comfort, yes, comfort My people!’ Says your God.” – Isaiah 40:1. It’s our prayer that God would use us to minister comfort to Gis people through the preaching of the Word, conversations, and prayer.

This passage also speaks cleary to the powerful transformational force of the Gospel. The Gospel comes and life changes for people in dramatic ways, “Every valley shall be exalted and every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked places shall be made straight and the rough places smooth.” – Isaiah 40:4.

We’re grateful for your prayers and look forward to providing more updates from the ground.

Where Did All These Evangelists Come From?

I am delighted by the harvest that God is reaping in many families across this nation. God is raising awareness of the beauty of the gospel and the desire to spread it. He seems to be raising up courageous men to preach in the streets. He is raising up young people who speak to their friends about Jesus.

At the recent White Unto Harvest conference, Kevin Swanson of Generations Radio interviewed me, and we talk about this work of God in families. You can listen to the interview below.

White Unto Harvest: Some Reflections

Now having some time to reflect on the White Unto Harvest conference I attended last weekend, I thought a few written thoughts were in order. But let me say that it was one of the best, most God-honoring, and motivating conferences I’ve ever attended. My friend Elder Scott Brown and the whole NCFIC team (www.ncfic.org) really outdid themselves to the glory of God.  My family and those with me all felt very welcomed.  And that is maybe an understatement; it felt like family! There was such a kindred spirit, a tender, holy, passionate feel to the whole thing…it was awesome!
