The Unborn Victims of Violence Act was passed by the North Carolina General Assembly in April. Today, December 1, 2011, it becomes law. The NC General Assembly has written a law stating that any person who unlawfully causes the death of an unborn child is guilty of murder of that unborn child. “Unborn child” is defined in the law as a member of the species homo sapiens, at any stage of development, who is carried in the womb. This law in effect recognizes that humans are human at conception and not at any other arbitrarily selected stage of development in utero. The law specifically excludes from prosecution acts still considered to be lawfully committed under the abortion statutes of North Carolina. This law has shattered the conflicted justification for lawful abortion used by so many of its advocates. The notion that a baby in the womb is not a person or not human has been written out of the pages of the law and “a woman’s choice” to abort her unborn baby has just been codified into law as murder if caused by anyone other than a doctor at her own direction. You can read the entire law here.
My friend Charles Churchill has manufactured this very humorous poem: “A Response to a Failed Courtship.” It is a funny satire about a hypothetical young man.

We reenacted the pilgrim departure on the Speedwell and the Mayflower using trailers. We boarded the Speedwell and the Mayflower, and quickly the Speedwell started to leak. So we returned to port, and most of us got in the Mayflower, but then a great storm swept John Howland (played by Peter Bradrick) off the deck and into the deep blue sea. But according the kind providence of God, he grabbed the ship’s rope that was being dragged behind the boat and he was saved…

Because God is sovereign in salvation, your children are in good hands. Thomas Fuller, chaplain to Oliver Cromwell captured this idea beautifully, in “A Father’s Hope and Warning.”
Lord, I find the genealogy of my Savior strangely checkered with
four remarkable changes in four immediate generations. (1) Rehoboam
begat Abijah; that is, a bad father begat a bad son. (2) Abijah
begat Asa; that is, a bad father begat a good son. (3) Asa begat
Jehoshaphat; that is, a good father a good son. (4) Jehoshaphat
begat Joram; that is, a good father a bad son. I see, Lord, from
hence that my father’s piety cannot be entailed; that is bad news
for me. But I see also that actual impiety is not always hereditary;
that is good news for my son.
The rumor spread and the alleged outlaws were hanged. It all started with a very trustworthy source saying they were serial killers. What was said was true, but they were innocent. Never trust your ears and don’t spread gossip.

What can happen when you fall into immorality – even in secret ? Here is a Sports Chart that shows what the devastation can look like.
“Do not let your heart turn aside to her ways, Do not stray into her paths; for she has cast down many wounded, and all who were slain by her were strong men. Her house is the way to hell, descending to the chambers of death” (Prov. 7:25-27).
When we are in the doldrums of spiritual sensitivities and passion, what do we do? Here is a helpful suggestion from J.C. Ryle in his book Holiness:
“Resolve this day that you will find out the reason of your standstill condition. Probe with a faithful and firm hand every corner of your soul. Search from one end of the camp to the other, till you find out the Achan who is weakening your hands.”
— J.C. Ryle, Holiness, Chap. VI, Growth
I encourage everyone to see this film. The Kendrick brothers have made a very wonderful and strategic film that I believe will be used of the Lord to rescue many.
In an effort to raise responsible young men of integrity and faithfulness, my two eldest grandsons, as they reached three years old, were each given their own livestock to take care of. It is always fun to see little boys in training to become men…because they are still little boys and do things like feed pigs with their teddy bears!

When my children were young, I walked them through various things to help them understand money. There were five elements of their financial education. Each time we met we studied a text of Scripture and drew out important principles. We reviewed three financial terms. We memorized a verse of Scripture. We filled out a personal financial statement (like the one you do for a bank). Finally, we prayed together. Here are some notes from some of our sessions in the year 2000. At that time, Kelly was 15, Blair 13, David 8, and Claudia was 6 years old. (more…)

Slate reports that Men Are Finished. Here is how they frame the issue, “Women now earn the majority of college degrees. Men play video games. Women thrive in information-age jobs. Men go to prison. Women hold families together. Men watch football.”
To answer the question, Slate is staging a debate, explaining that, “ABC News Legal Analyst Dan Abrams and Hanna Rosin, award-winning journalist for Slate and the Atlantic, will argue for the motion that ‘men are finished.’ Feminist scholar Christina Hoff Sommers and Men’s Health magazine editor-in-chief David Zinczenko will argue against it.”
Here is the proposition Slate is debating: “A modern, post-industrial economy that seems better suited to women than men has led many experts to wonder if men are being permanently left behind. Education and employment statistics point to a clear and growing dominance in women’s status at home and in the workplace. Are men primed for a comeback, or have the old rules changed for good?”
Society has correctly diagnosed a wide-spread disease in the American culture: boys remaining as boys well into “adulthood.” There appears to be a power struggle for dominance between the sexes (which women seem to have won). However, God is raising up a generation that loves and declares biblical, God-ordained manhood and womanhood – a glorious and beautiful order which is a picture of the gospel.
While Slate has scheduled a debate, we have scheduled a retreat to address the problem they identify – by gathering men and boys together to show the ways of biblical manhood.
Oh happy day…On September 8, my daughter Blair gave birth to Aeden Chase Tsantles. Taylor and Blair…This is such a happy time.
