7 Reasons Families Should Pray

Reason 1

Because we receive every day family-mercies from the hand of God. He loads us daily with His benefits (Ps. 68:19). When you wake in the morning and find your dwelling safe, not consumed with fire, not broken through by thieves, is not this a family-mercy? When you wake and find none dead in their beds, that news is not brought you in the morning, there is one child dead in one bed and another in another, and there is not a lodging-room in the house but the last night one or other died in it; but on the contrary you find all well in the morning and refreshed by the rest and sleep of the night— are not these and many more such mercies to the family, that when you rise you should call them all together jointly to bless God for? If it had been otherwise, [if] master or mistress [were] dead, children or servants dead, would not the rest say, “It would have been a mercy to us all, if God had spared him, her, or them?” If your house had been consumed by flames, and God had turned you all out of doors before morning, would you not have said, “It would have been a mercy, if God had safely preserved us and our dwellings and caused us to rest and sleep and rise in safety?” Why, Sirs, will you not acknowledge mercies to be mercies, till God hath taken them away from you? And if you do, should you not give the praise daily unto God? Was it not God Himself that watched over you while you did sleep, and could not, did not, watch yourselves? “Except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain…for so he giveth his beloved sleep” (Ps. 127:1-2).

And as you have had many family-mercies in the night to bless God for in the morning, so you have many family-mercies in the day to give thanks to God for at night before you go to bed. Methinks you should not quietly sleep till you have been together on your knees, lest God should say, “This family that hath not acknowledged My mercy to them this day, nor given Me the glory of those benefits of which to them I gave the comfort, shall never see the light of another day, nor have the mercies of one day more to bless Me for. What if God should say unto you when you are laid down in your beds, “This night your souls shall be required of you, you that went to bed before you had given Me the praise of the mercies that I had given unto you all the day, and before you had prayed for My protection over you in the night.” Take heed: though God be patient, do not provoke Him.

What is the Sign of a Pharisee?

When people think about the false holiness of the Pharisees, they often think about legalism. But the real sign of one who has the false holiness of a Pharisee is that they are seeking to use their “holiness” to bring attention to themselves. This isn’t holiness, because true holiness seeks to bring glory to God, and not to themselves. Dan Horn in this video talks about the signs of a Pharisee that we see in Scripture.

To hear more about holiness from Dan Horn, come to the Highway of Holiness conference, Oct. 29-31 at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in Asheville, NC.

Sixth Video on Planned Parenthood Released

This video from the Center for Medical Progress, “highlights a young woman’s eyewitness narrative of the daily practice of fetal body parts harvesting in Planned Parenthood abortion clinics, describing tissue procurement workers’ coordination with abortion providers, the pressure placed on patients, and disregard for patient consent.”

More on this series from the Center for Medical Progress:

The series follows the personal narrative of Holly O’Donnell, a former Blood and TIssue Procurement Technician for StemExpress, a start-up biotech company from northern California that partners with Planned Parenthood clinics to purchase their aborted fetus parts and resell them for scientific experimentation. As a procurement tech, O’Donnell’s job was to identify pregnant patients matching the specifications of StemExpress customers and to harvest the fetal body parts from their abortions.

It’s not an option, it’s a demand,” StemExpress supervisors instructed O’Donnell about approaching pregnant women at Planned Parenthood for fetal tissue “donations.” O’Donnell says the StemExpress techs working in Planned Parenthood clinics sometimes harvested fetal parts without obtaining consent from the patients: “If there was a higher gestation, and the technicians needed it, there were times when they would just take what they wanted. And these mothers don’t know. And there’s no way they would know.

Federal laws on the procurement and use of human fetal tissue require that patients consent to the tissue donation subsequent to consenting to the abortion procedure (42 U.S.C. 289g-1).

A True Experience of Grace

How does one know they are saved? How do you know if you truly know God? 1 John 2:3 says, “Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.” When someone is truly saved, they desire to keep the commandments of God and to run from sin.

The Holy Spirit Who Sanctifies

Are you being made holy? How is your relationship with the Holy Spirit? The Holy Spirit is perhaps the most neglected person of the holy trinity. The Holy Spirit, the third person in the Trinity, is the one who breathes life into our dead souls (regeneration), and then continues to sanctify us, molding us into the image of the Lord Jesus Christ! The Spirit of God is after all, “Holy” and the one who makes us holy. Holiness is the chief evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit.

To hear more on holiness from Jeff Pollard, please come to the Highway of Holiness conference, Oct. 29-31 at the Ridgecrest Conference Center. For more information and to register, go to  the events page for the conference.

Where Are You Spending Your Money?

Please join me this evening at 5pm EST for a live stream of the Haggai survey.

Where are you spending your money? That is the issue that is holding back the rebuilding of the temple. William Hendrickesn summarizes this way, “Haggai, in arousing the people to resume their work, appealed to the will, the emotions, and the reason (1:7-11); and his exhortation had the desired effect: three weeks after the first prophecy was uttered everybody was busy rebuilding the temple (1:15). It was finished four years later, about the year 516 B.C. (Ezra 6:15). A second prophecy was necessary in order to encourage those who deplored the insignificant aspect of the new building, even in its beginnings, as compared with the temple of Solomon. The prophet declares that Jehovah will shake the nations so that their precious things, silver and gold, shall fill the house. In fact, “the latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says Jehovah of hosts; and in this place will I give peace, says Jehovah of hosts” (2:6-9).”1

The Power of the Spirit in Holiness

When the Holy Spirit saves a person, that person then that person is sanctified by the Spirit as well. God does not leave a sinner, who is saved, in a state of perpetual disobedience and living like the old man. He gives them new desires and, though they will never be perfect, they will continue to grow in holiness. Joel Beeke in this video discusses the power of the spirit in holiness, as well as the Trinitarian framework of it.

To hear more from Joel Beeke on the subject of holiness, please come to The Highway of Holiness conference, October 29-31, at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in Asheville, NC. For more information, and to register, visit the events page for this conference

What is Faith?

Hebrews 11:1 – “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”

What is faith? In Chapter 11, the doctrine of justification was explained, and we know from Scripture that justification is by faith alone. Faith is knowing that the Gospel is true, and then throwing all of your faith on the Lord Jesus Christ. Those who truly believe abandon all other hopes, whatever it may be, and cast it all on the Lord Jesus Christ.

There is no hope apart from Christ. Even if you have done many good deeds, in the world’s eyes, you still cannot barter with God. Isaiah 64:6 says that “all our righteousnesses are like rags.” Romans 3:12 says, “There is none who does good, no, not one.”

The only hope that people have is to repent of their sins and put all their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, trusting in God alone for their salvation. There is nothing that they can do to earn it. Faith acknowledges that there is nothing that we can bring to the table, and that “there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12), the only name is Christ.

Here is our session on chapter 14 of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith titled, “Of Saving Faith.”

Church Ministry Facilitates Family Ministry

We affirm that God’s people must be nurtured through the example and instruction of their church’s elders and members in everyday life, and of the importance of fathers and mothers training their families to fulfill the Great Commission through ministry to the saints and witness to the lost (Matt. 28:19-20; Acts 2:46-47; 8:4; 18:24-26; Eph. 5:21-33; 6:1-4; Titus 2:2-6; Heb. 3:13).

We deny/reject the emphasis on family-fragmenting methods or programs that disregard the nature of the church as God’s people in community and that displace or discourage family ministry outreach.

What Does a Holy Man or Woman Look Like?

What does true holiness look like in a person? In this video, Joel Beeke gives three important things that manifest themselves in the life of a holy person: humility (the more they are sanctified, the more unholy they realize they are), mortification motivated by a love for Christ, and a desire to plant themselves in the means of grace, so that they do not wander from the path.

If you would like to hear more from Joel Beeke on the subject of holiness, come to the Highway of Holiness conference in Asheville, NC, Oct. 29-31.

God Destroys Nations that Mistreat the Poor and Defenseless

The Center for Medical Progress just released their fourth video on the illegal activities of Planned Parenthood.  God will judge nations that abuse and mistreat those that are weak and poor. Proverbs 31:8 says, “Open your mouth for the speechless, / In the cause of all who are appointed to die.” Christians have a duty to open their mouths and speak for those who do not have a voice – in this case, unborn children.

Nahum, speaking to the “bloody city” (Nahum 3:1) of Ninevah, said, “You also will be drunk; / You will be hidden; / You also will seek refuge from the enemy” (Nahum 3:11). This is the judgment of God upon a wicked nation that mistreats the weak and the poor.

The Reading of Scripture in the Assembly of the Saints

The Reading of Scripture in the Assembly of the Saints

“Till I come, give attention to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.”
– 1 Timothy 4:13

“So shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth;
It shall not return to me void,
But it shall accomplish what I please,
And it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”

– Isaiah 55:11

It happens every Sunday – someone opens the Bible and reads it to the congregation. When this happens, the voice of God Himself is heard in the congregation. The weightiness of the moment calls those who read scripture publicly to be deliberate and prepared. It is perhaps one of the most important parts of our corporate gatherings. The Bible makes this very clear.

Not an inferior element
