Fear of God Devotional: What Kind Of Sorrow Are You Experiencing?

Is your sorrow “vertical” or “horizontal”?

Rob Ventura explains in this video that there are two types of sorrow – worldly and godly. Worldly sorrow misses the point that a person has sinned against God. It is “horizontal” in that the individual only sees the effect that sin has on themselves or on others.

In contrast, godly sorrow is “vertical” in that it recognizes that you have directly sinned against God. A Christian is concerned that they have sinned against God. Such a person understands that he has sinned directly against God. Even if there are other people that have been affected by his sin, he is primarily grieved and sorrowful that he has sinned against God.

Psalm 69:5 (NKJV) – “O God, You know my foolishness; and my sins are not hidden from You.”
