Paul Washer: Doctrine of Demons vs. Gospel of Christ

Paul Washer addressed the seemingly anti-climactic statement of Paul in 1 Timothy 4:1-3 about what would be considered a doctrine of demons.  Paul is setting the stage for something dramatic. The lead-up would suggest that Paul was about to reveal who the anti-Christ is.

“Now the Spirit speaks expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God has created to be received with thanksgiving of them who believe and know the truth.”

“What is Paul saying here?” asked Washer.  “Anything in your life, anything in your church, anything in your preaching, anything in your thought life that takes pre-eminence over Jesus Christ is a ‘doctrine of demons.’

“Teaching on marriage when it becomes the core of your church.  Teaching on the proper size of a family, debating courtship vs. dating, homeschooling, measuring the length of the dresses of the young ladies, asking about whether a fellow church goer has a TV in their home. These things become a ‘doctrine of demons’ when you talk about them more than the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”
