The Kind of Civil Leaders We Need Today

Today I’m taking the NCFIC interns and my family to my Vernon. As we enter into the season of political races and decisions about who to vote for, the most important consideration is, “What does the Bible say about what qualifies a civil leader?” I saw an illustration of this while at Mt. Vernon at the grave of Bushrod Washington, the President’s nephew. He was a U.S. Supreme Court associate justice from 1798 to 1829. This is the kind of civil leader the Bible says we should promote. Here is what was written on his grave stone:

As a Judge, he was
Wise and Just.
“A man of Truth, hating
covetousness.”
Firm in every honour-
-able purpose and pursuit.
Yet gentle, humane and
condescending.
A sincere Christian.
Doing in all things the
will of his Master.
And resting his hope of
eternal happiness.
Alone on the righteousness
of Jesus Christ.

What’s So Bad About Sin?

Kevin Swanson is a keynote speaker at our upcoming conference The Highway of Holiness. In this video, he contrasts the dreadful effects of sin, with the joy and blessing of the fruits of the Spirit. As Christians, we should enjoy walking in holiness.

Sin is not enjoyable, it ruins every part of our lives. Sin is corrupting, but when we receive the Holy Spirit, and the fruit of the spirit, it’s a wonderful, joyful, beautiful experience to walk in the Spirit, rather than walking in the flesh. This is where we want to be as Christians.

To learn more about this subject, please consider joining us next month in Asheville, NC, to hear Kevin’s message titled: Killing The Deeds Of The Flesh – Romans 8:13

Laying Hold of Sabbath Joy

On Sunday, I preached on Isaiah 56:1-8, Laying Hold of Sabbath Joy, where the Lord speaks of an in-gathering of believers to a new and happy community of obedient sons and daughters who have experienced the joy of the mountain of the lord, obeying His commandments. In this section, God explains various benefits of the expanding sabbath worship. He tells us that the celebration of the sabbath is one way He brings justice and righteousness to the world. This happens as we come together to observe Sabbath worship, re-calibrating our minds and refashioning our perspectives on all things. People are gathered. Eunuchs get a family, foreigners get companionship and outcasts are enfolded.

As a result, justice is preserved and joy is increased. The Sabbath is meant to be a day of delight (Isa 58:13-14) as reflected in Psalm 118:24 which is a prophesy of the resurrection of Christ and the church celebrating the sabbath on resurrection day, “This is the day the LORD has made; / We will rejoice and be glad in it” (Psalm 118:24).

Here are seventeen considerations for joyful Sabbath celebration:

  • See the goodness of the Lord
  • Sanctify the day
  • Draw near to God in sincerity and truth
  • Cry out to God
  • Re-focus your thoughts
  • Re-order your perspectives by the majesty of God.
  • Capture time in a more beautiful way
  • Stop creating and be re-created
  • Heal and be healed
  • Pray
  • Taste and see that the Lord is good
  • Consider heaven
  • Hear from God
  • Remember the peace and joy of the Kingdom of Heaven
  • Use it for justice and righteousness
  • Avoid both antinomian and legalistic extremes
  • Prepare for the Sabbath

If you are interested in learning more on the doctrine of the Sabbath, go to the NCFIC store to download A Day for Delight, which contains several sermons on this topic.

Latest Video on Planned Parenthood

Here is the latest video from The Center for Medical Progress on Planned Parenthood. The church needs to stand up and spread the word about this. “Open your mouth for the speechless, / In the cause of all who are appointed to die” (Proverbs 31:8).

Freedom 2015: National Religious Liberties Conference

It is our privilege to invite you to join us at the Freedom 2015 National Religious Liberties Conference on November 6-7 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Friends of NCFIC registering by October 15 will receive a special rate of $79 — 60% off the regular price of $199 (use coupon code: NCFIC).

Family freedoms have not fared well over the last eight years during the Obama administration. Religious liberty is under attack like never before. The recent Supreme Court decision in the Obergefell v. Hodges case is a clear example of our country’s animosity towards families who hold to Christian beliefs and desire to pass this faith on to their children.

As we look at the 2016 presidential elections, we must send a strong message to our leaders that family and religious liberties are of utmost importance. But even more importantly, this is the time for us to prepare our hopeful, optimistic response to the growing opposition we face.

Come to the Freedom 2015 conference to get equipped, educated and encouraged by national speakers, and fellowship and network with other Christians!

Article XXI – Judgment Begins With the Church

We affirm that God has declared “judgment must begin at the house of God” and thus, we Christians are to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, looking to judge ourselves lest we be chastened all the more (1 Peter 4:175:6).

We deny/reject that the church should continue disobeying God and delay repentance and reformation, or that she will escape the wrath of God for where the church has contributed to the disintegration and destruction of the family by ignoring or taking lightly biblical roles and responsibilities.

The Definition of Holiness

In this video, Joel Beeke defines holiness as: becoming more set apart unto God, and becoming less like the world. God is greatly concerned for our holiness, and He will continue to remove the dross in our lives, until we are made spotless on that glorious day at the marriage feast of the Lamb. As we make our ways through this life as God’s children, we will always be becoming more set apart unto God.

To hear more from Joel Beeke on holiness, come to the Highway of Holiness conference, Oct. 29-31 at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in Asheville, NC.

What Does Holiness Look Like?

What does holiness look like? In this video, Craig Houston points us to the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23. These are fruits that are to be desired by true Christian, and they want more of them in their life! The Christian living in holiness is living a Spirit-filled life, not a self-righteous and legalistic one.

To hear more from Craig Houston on the topic of holiness, come to the Highway of Holiness conference, Oct. 29-31 at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in Asheville, NC.

The Lord Disciplines Those He Loves

This weekend I’m in Kerrville Texas at the Love One Another conference put on by FORGE ministries. It’s such a privilege to speak on the love of God. I’ve learned a lot preparing for this conference, and from the messages we’ve heard already.

Here is a shot transcript from my keynote titled “The Lord Disciplines Those He Loves.”

I hope we can dissect our own trials and difficulties through the lens of the love of God. Maybe some of your trials have come upon you because of your own foolishness and pride, but God is so good, and His love is so great, that He would even use your sins and your pride for you, not against you. He causes all things to work together for the good of the called according to His purpose.

God is so good, He’s so loving! He’s such a kind Father, His Son is such a good Shepherd! He is so full of mercy!

A Conference on Love

I am in Texas this weekend speaking at a very unique conference hosted by FORGE Ministries titled, “Love One Another.” It just occurred to me last night: I’ve never been to a conference that was specifically designed to cover what Scripture says about love. How strange it is.

I asked several people here at the conference, and I couldn’t find a single person who had been to a conference on love. True, biblical love is a central matter in the Christian life. It is the fulfillment of the law (Romans 13:10), it is as Paul said, “The greatest” (1 Corinthians 13:13).

So, I am very thankful to be here to hear messages on love, and to be changed by them. I’m also grateful to have the opportunity to deliver messages on this subject. My three speeches are on the topics of: “God’s Love in Discipline,” “Preserving Love Among the Brethren,” and “Diligent Love in the Home.” Then, on Sunday, I will be preaching here in Kerrville, TX.

Article XX – God Requires Examination

We affirm that God enjoins us to “prove all things; hold fast that which is good” and “let every man prove his own work,” particularly when the people of God are not thriving according to the biblical requirements (Rom. 12:2Gal. 6:4Eph. 5:10171 Thess. 5:21).

We deny/reject that elders who shepherd the flock of Christ have no need to carefully examine God’s infallible Word regarding their role in their own church, the beliefs and practices of their own church, and the roles and relations of families—husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, children, and individuals—to their own church.

God’s Holiness is Why We Worship

Why should we worship God? We worship God because He is holy! When someone comes into contact with the holiness of God, the response is to worship. Kevin Swanson points to Isaiah 6, and Isaiah’s response when he sees the holiness of God.

To hear more from Kevin Swanson on the subject of holiness, come to the Highway of Holiness conference in Asheville, NC at the Ridgecrest Conference Center, Oct. 29-31.

How Sanctification of a Believer Changes a Church

When God sanctifies a people, he convicts them of their sin, and then gives them a heart of repentance so that they repent of it. When God sanctifies a believer, it does have an affect on the church. Dan Horn in this video points to 1 Corinthians 12, where it talks about the church as a body. When one part of the body is sanctified, the other parts will change as well. Then when the church changes, the state will change as well. This is how God works.

To hear more from Dan Horn on the subject of holiness, come to the Highway of Holiness conference on Oct. 29-31 at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in Asheville, NC.

The Sabbath – A Day for Delight!

In Scripture, the Sabbath is meant to be a day for delighting in the Lord, and gathering together with the people of God. It is common today to hear people argue that the Sabbath has been abolished. But what does Scripture actually say?

A few years ago, my fellow elder (Dan Horn) and I went through the major passages in Scripture that deal with the Sabbath and exposited them. When should the Sabbath be observed? What should our Sabbath days look like, and how are we supposed to conduct ourselves? How serious is it to break the Sabbath commandment?

All of these questions, and more, are answered in this series. I pray that these messages will be blessing to you, your family, and your church. God was so gracious and merciful to give us a day of rest from our labors, to picture our spiritual rest in the Lord Jesus Christ and our future eternal rest.
