One of the messages I like to pound home is that young men should not spend their years of youth playing games. In the Proverbs, Solomon touches on one of the reasons why – it reflects a gigantic absence of “understanding,” and the stupidity of following what is empty,

“He who tills the land will be satisfied with bread, But he who follows frivolity is devoid of understanding” (Prov. 12:11).

I talk about this in the book Preparing Boys for Battle, which contains seventeen critical exhortations that I believe fathers must deliver to their sons. Why? To discipline them to be the mighty warriors God intends them to be. These were the things I told my own son David as he was growing up.
