The Fear of God and Church Beauty

Here is Christ’s tenderness and compassion towards His people in their guilt from sin.

John is speaking of what makes a true church. What makes a church happy and humble and sweetly composed before God? He answers How do you get the junk out of a church; how God purifies His church; How God humbles His church so that they are not puffed up; How He keeps His church from legalism; How the church roots out sin? How the Lord keeps His church keep from being fake?

This passage displays a beautiful picture of church life. It is a life of, confession, forgiveness and cleansing. It’s center of this beautiful life is relationship with the Advocate, Jesus Christ the righteous. His sacrifice appeased the wrath of God (propitiation). It is a fellowship of truth tellers instead of liars. There is no deception. It is a place of glorifying the Father instead of making Him a liar.

He does all these things through confession of sin:  “If we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness,”  1 John 1:9.
