Fathers and sons need to get on the same page about what is happening to them - especially when they are having a conflict. One of those areas is the matter of worldliness and the forces that are activating the "lust flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life." Nothing that fathers and sons do together is more important than this. It determines everything about your relationship and who you are in the world.
It is not the fact that you have experienced the lust of the flesh the lust of the eyes or the pride of life that will damn your soul.Your soul hangs in the balance on this: do you love the world and it's lusts that present themselves to your senses.
We are getting close to Halloween now and If you see a picture of the devil, he will have a pitchfork. But notice that almost all devils pitchforks have three tines. In my mind, these tines represent the three types of idolatry listed in 1 John 2:15-17. The conflicts and challenges you have as father and son will always arise out of these three things.
Fathers should always ask: How do I sabotage my son by my capitulating to the lusts of the flesh. Am I helping my son to build good affections? Am I building affections for holiness. Sons should always ask, what’s driving me? Is it the world? Is it the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life?
