Last Sunday, I preached from Matthew 4:12-25 in a sermon entitled, “The people in darkness have seen a great light”. Who are those in darkness? Matthew quotes Isaiah 9 in order to demonstrate that the darkness that Jesus is confronting has come from setting aside the law of God. They have loved the ways of the world more than God’s ways. They created their own conditions of happiness instead of submitting to what God has commanded. Who is the great light? Our Lord and Savior Jesus is the great light who enters the region of Galilee preaching repentance and the gospel of the kingdom. He transforms the very nature of the entire region as He goes about Galilee teaching in the synagogues, preaching, and healing all kinds of sickness and disease among the people.
